The transfer rumour mill has thrown up a genuinely intriguing one this week, with Manchester United reportedly joining Arsenal in the race to sign Julian Álvarez from Atlético Madrid. If true, it’s the kind of battle that could define both clubs’ summers.
According to Paper Talk, United have made contact with the Argentine’s representatives, signalling serious intent from the Old Trafford hierarchy. That’s a significant step. You don’t pick up the phone to a player of Álvarez’s calibre unless you’re fairly convinced you can make something happen.
Álvarez, 24, joined Atlético last summer from Manchester City for around £82 million, so any deal would need to be substantial. He’s a World Cup winner, a Champions League winner, and one of the most complete centre-forwards in European football right now. The idea that he’d be available after just one season in Madrid is, on the surface, surprising.
But Atlético’s finances are complicated, and Diego Simeone’s side have occasionally shown a willingness to move players on quickly when the price is right. Whether that applies here remains to be seen.
Arsenal’s interest is easier to understand. Mikel Arteta has been searching for a reliable goal-scorer who can lead the line with both intelligence and movement, and Álvarez fits that profile almost perfectly. He’s not a pure penalty-box striker; he links play, presses relentlessly, and contributes across the pitch in ways that suit Arteta’s system.
United’s interest, though, is the more eyebrow-raising development. Ruben Amorim is still reshaping his squad after a difficult debut season, and committing significant funds to a forward of this price would represent a major statement of ambition.
Whether United can realistically compete financially with Arsenal, let alone attract a player of Álvarez’s standing given their current league position, is a fair question to ask. Finishing eighth in the Premier League doesn’t exactly scream “come and win trophies here”.
Still, stranger things have happened in summer transfer windows. If Álvarez himself fancies a return to English football, the picture changes considerably. The question is whether United can offer him something Arsenal simply can’t.
