Of all the ways to end up on a stretcher, celebrating a victory might just be the cruelest irony in football.
Jordan Henderson, the former Liverpool and England captain, was stretchered off during post-match celebrations after his side’s win, in what has to be one of the most baffling injury moments in recent memory. The man survived ninety-plus minutes of competitive football, only to come a cropper in the moment he was supposed to be enjoying himself.
Details emerging suggest Henderson picked up the knock while joining teammates in what should have been a routine moment of jubilation. It’s the kind of thing that sounds like a joke, but anyone who’s watched a professional footballer attempt a celebratory slide knows the turf doesn’t always cooperate.
“It’s one of those situations where you almost don’t believe it when you hear it,” one pundit noted on social media shortly after footage began circulating. “But knowing football, you absolutely believe it.”
Henderson, 33, has had a turbulent couple of years by any measure. His controversial move to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ettifaq in 2023, followed by a swift return to European football with Ajax and then Sporting CP, raised more than a few eyebrows. He’s been working hard to rebuild his reputation and form, which makes this latest setback particularly frustrating timing.

Celebration injuries are rarer than you’d think, but they do happen with an almost comedic regularity when they do. Robbie Fowler famously struggled with a hamstring during a goal celebration back in the 1990s. The body, apparently, does not always share your excitement.
Whether Henderson recovers quickly or faces a longer spell on the sidelines, you do have to wonder: at what point do clubs start choreographing celebrations with the same level of preparation they give to set pieces?
